Acoustically transparent means a material allows sound waves to pass through it with little to no resistance.
For acoustic panels this is important because the fabric is not doing the sound absorbing. The insulation inside the panel is for sound absorption. The fabric is for aesthetic appeal and protecting the insulation from the room.
If sound cannot reach the insulation the panel cannot do its job effectively.
If the fabric blocks or reflects sound:
- Absorption performance drops
- NRC values are reduced
- You lose clarity instead of gaining it
Is thin fabric always acoustically transparent?
Not true. Weave density matters more than thickness. A thin fabric with a very tight weave can still reflect or block sound preventing it from reaching the insulation behind it. A slightly thicker fabric with an open & breathable weave can remain acoustically transparent and allow sound to pass through effectively.
Are all fabrics labelled "acoustic" tested?
No. All companies do not test their fabrics. We have had all of our fabrics tested by Riverbank Acoustic Labs in Illinois, USA.

How is acoustic fabric tested for transparency?
True acoustic transparency is confirmed through lab testing and not appearance.
Testing compares acoustic performance
- With exposed insulation
- With fabric covering the insulation

A good acoustic fabric should cause little to no loss in NRC when applied over an acoustic core.
Our fabrics all show 0% loss to NRC from addition of fabric over 2" 6PCF acoustical core.
Using the right fabric ensures:
- Your panels perform as designed
- You get the full value of the insulation
- Your room sounds clearer and more controlled
Where to buy acoustic fabric that has been tested?
You are in the right place! All three of our acoustic fabric lines have been tested in a 3rd party lab. You can trust our fabric will look great, last a long time, and work like you need it to!
