How to Remove Wrinkles and Creases from Acoustic Fabric
Share
If you’re building DIY acoustic panels or working with acoustical fabric, you may notice wrinkles or creases from folding, shipping, or storage. The good news is that acoustic fabric is designed to be easy to work with and wrinkles are simple to remove.
Why Acoustic Fabric Wrinkles
Most acoustic fabrics are made from polyester, which can develop creases when folded or compressed. This is completely normal and does not affect performance.
Acoustic fabric is designed to smooth out during installation when stretched properly.
Method 1: Let Tension Do the Work (Best Option)
The easiest and most effective way to remove wrinkles is during installation.
When you stretch the fabric tightly across a frame, the tension naturally smooths out creases and folds.
- Start stretching lengthwise first
- Staple gradually while maintaining tension
- Start stapling in the middle and work your way to the corners
- Avoid leaving slack in the fabric
In most cases this method alone will eliminate wrinkles completely.
Method 2: Iron on Low Heat
You can iron acoustic fabric if needed, but it must be done carefully.
- Use the polyester/synthetic setting
- Avoid direct contact with high heat
- Place a pressing cloth between the iron and fabric
Too much heat can damage polyester so always keep the temperature low.
Method 3: Use a Dryer (Quick and Easy)
A dryer can help loosen wrinkles before installation.
- Get fabric a little damp
- Place fabric in the dryer on low heat or permanent press
- Run for a short cycle (10–15 minutes)
- Remove promptly to prevent new wrinkles
Method 4: Use a Garment Steamer
- Use a handheld garment steamer
- Keep the steamer moving to avoid overheating
- Do not oversaturate the fabric
Steam relaxes the fibers and helps wrinkles fall out naturally.
Thing To Avoid
- Do not use high heat
- Do not leave fabric sitting in the dryer after a cycle
- Do not apply steam or heat in one spot for too long
