How To Cut Acoustic Foam

One of the most common questions we hear from our customers is, "what do you use to cut the foam panels?" The answer might surprise you. 

Cutting acoustic foam is often necessary when completing vocal booth installations, spot treating a studio or if you are trying to make a creative design with the foam panels. What is the best tool for getting precise and professional looking cuts?

The acoustic foam panels are soft and malleable enough to cut with scissors or a utility knife. However, these tools often leave rugged or uneven edges and give the foam an unprofessional look. 

To avoid these imperfections use an electric carving knife to cut acoustic foam. An electric carving knife is the same one you use to cut a turkey or ham. If you do not already have one of these around the house they are fairly inexpensive to buy online. The Black and Decker version below is only $15 on Amazon right now. 

You can line up your cuts using the ridges already in the foam or using a piece of chalk to mark the back (flat side) of the acoustic foam panel. Be sure to keep your hand as steady as possible in order to get the most clean looking cut.
